Los artesanos de la Etnia Seri o Comcáac elaboran figuras de Palo Blanco en forma de animales de su entorno, en este caso una serpiente en movimiento; el proceso para preparar la rama de ese árbol es tallar primero a mano, hervir después en agua para que obtenga mayor protección ante la termita, y por último terminar lijando para darle un acabado blanco marfil natural. Esta es otra hermosa pieza artesanal que nos muestra la gran habilidad artística de los artesanos Seris del Estado de Sonora.

The Seri Artisans of the State of Sonora make figures of Palo Blanco in shape of animals of their environment, in this case a snake in motion; the process for preparing the branch of the tree begin with a hand-carved, then they boil in water to obtain greater protection against termite, and finally they finish with a sanding to give a natural ivory white aspect. This is another beautiful handcrafted piece that shows the great artistry of Seri People.

Este hermoso Collar elaborado por la etnia Seri (Comca’ac) de la costa central de Sonora y la Isla del Tiburón en México, en esta ocasión, como suelen hacerlo, utilizaron elementos de su entorno como conchas, caracoles y vértebras de pequeños pescados para elaborar esta bella pieza artística. Después de recolectar la materia prima en la orilla de la playa, agujeraron cada pieza antes de unirlas con hilo de pescar. Al final completaron una hermosa pieza, única e irrepetible.

This beautiful necklace made by the Seri ethnicity (Comca'ac) from the central coast of Sonora and Tiburón Island in Mexico, is made by natural materials from their environment like shells, snails and vertebrae of small fish. After they collect the materials at the beach, they pierce each piece and unite them with fishing line, the result: an unique and unrepeatable beautiful art piece.

[ES] La Etnia Seri habita en la costa central de Sonora y en la isla más grande de México: la Isla del Tiburón; es reconocida internacionalmente por la calidad de su cestería. Esta hermosa Corita es una versión miniatura de las que generalmente elaboran, las cuales van desde 20cm hasta 1.5m de altura, con formas tradicionales globular o extendida. Su variedad de cestería la han venido elaborando desde la época prehispánica, su producción es muy laboriosa y requiere mucho tiempo; el proceso completo de esta Corita miniatura pudo haber tardado varios días, aunque pueden terminar varias el mismo día. Primeramente realizan una recolección y selección de ramas de “Torote Prieto”, arbusto que utilizan en su elaboración; el largo proceso de preparación implica tatemar esas ramas, para después rasgarlas con los dientes y obtener las tiras que se utilizarán para su obra; después tiñen esas tiras de colores extraídos de raíces, cortezas y flores de su entorno; posteriormente las remojan en agua de mar para que tengan mayor flexibilidad y mayor protección al deterioro; para finalizar, tejen las tiras ya procesadas para darle forma a una inigualable obra de arte llena de cultura y tradición. Cuando alguna artesana termina una Corita de Gran tamaño (alrededor de 1.50m de altura), toda la comunidad festeja en una gran fiesta ceremonial, ya que pueden tardarse más de 2 años en ser terminadas. Por su alto costo, es un lujo que por lo general es comprado por extranjeros en muchos miles de dólares. Es una obra de arte orgullosamente sonorense y mexicana.

[EN] The Seri ethnicity (Comca'ac) lives on the central coast of Sonora and in the largest island of Mexico: Shark Island; is internationally recognized for the quality of their basketry. This beautiful Corita (basket) is a miniature version of what they usually do from 20cm to 1.5m tall with globular or extended traditional ways. Their variety of basketry is present since pre-Hispanic times, the production is very laborious and need a lot of time, the entire process of this Corita mini could have taken several days. They first collect branches of the bush used in this artwork: "Torote Prieto", the long process of preparation involves to wilt these branches, then rip them with teeth and get the strips to be used for his work; after that, they stain those strips with colors extracted from roots, cortex and flowers of their environment; subsequently, they soak the strips in the sea to have greater flexibility and greater protection against deterioration; finally, they weave the strips and proceed to shape a unique work of art, full of culture and tradition. When an artisan finishes a Corita of great size (about 55inch tall), the whole community celebrated in a ceremonial holiday, that is because it can take more than two years to be completed, and the finish work deserve it. Because of its high cost, one Big Corita it is a luxury that is usually bought by foreigners in thousands of dollars. It is an artwork proudly Sonoran and Mexican.

[ES] La Etnia Seri o Comcaac ha habitado la costa central de Sonora y la Isla del Tiburón, concentrados actualmente en las comunidades de Punta Chueca y Desemboque. Los artesanos Seris elaboran entre otras obras una gran variedad de accesorios como collares, aretes, pulseras y broches para el cabello. Utilizan materia prima natural como conchas, caracoles, escamas de pescado, vértebras de víbora, de cascabel o de pequeños pescados, trozos del árbol Torote Prieto, bolsitas de tela de colores, semillas de plantas, entre otras cosas. Este bello objeto es un Collar elaborado con diferentes tipos, colores y tamaños de caracoles, quedando una pieza muy artística que plasma la belleza de su entorno: el mar. El proceso inicia con una colecta caminando por la orilla de la playa, después agujeran cada caracol para introducir después el hilo de pescar; el resultado: una hermosa obra artística única e irrepetible.

[ES] La Etnia Seri o Comcáac ocupa desde tiempos arcaicos la costa central de Sonora y la Isla del Tiburón, actualmente se concentran en las comunidades de Punta Chueca y Desemboque. Una de las artesanías más representativas de Sonora son las esculturas Seris de madera del árbol Palo Fierro (olneya tésota), donde los artesanos suelen representar su entorno en diversas figuras y tamaños. El Palo Fierro es una madera muy dura, sin poros, no le penetra la humedad, y es tan pesada que no flota en el agua. Ellos cortan árboles fulminados por rayos o secos por otras causas, después los tallan a mano con sus herramientas y procesos tradicionales, dando un fino acabado donde queda plasmada la sensibilidad, habilidad y estilo de los grandes artesanos Seris.

[EN] The Seri or Comcáac people held since archaic times the central coast of Sonora and Shark Island, currently concentrated in the communities of Punta Chueca and Desemboque. One of the most representative Sonora's crafts are Seris's sculptures of Ironwood Tree (Olneya tesota), where artisans often represent their environment in various shapes and sizes. The Ironwood tree has a very hard wood, non-porous, where wetness can't penetrate, and is so heavy that it doesn't float in water. They cut trees that were hitting by lightning or with other causes of dry; then the hand-carved with both traditional tools and processes, give a fine finish which reflect sensitivity, skill and style of the great craftsmen Seris.
